The Spaniard rose to a career-high 23 in February last year after reaching the Zagreb semifinals as well as the quarterfinals in Doha and Houston.

In 2010 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez captured the title in Bangkok and also posted the biggest win of his career over world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in in the semifinal (saving 24 break points). He also won a doubles title that year in Doha with Albert Montanes.

The Spaniard is coached by Juan Manuel Esparcia Clemente and he played in Auckland in 2005, 2007 and 2010.
