The 2012 Heineken Open lost its first seeded player as American Donald Young lost a three-setter to Alejandro Falla of Colombia.
Young took the first set, but his opponent came back to take the next two to knock out our 7th seed.
"It's really disappointing," Young said. "It's not nice to lose the first match of the year but it happens. He'll be sticking around for the doubles to play with partner James Cerretani of the US.
In other first round matches, Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci took out Rui Machado of Portugal.
The qualifying tournament wrapped up earlier today with Adrian Mannarino, Benoit Paire, Tobias Kamke and Stephane Bohli successfully making the main draw.
The night session features Santiago Giraldo of Colombia versus the last Kiwi standing - Michael Venus.
