Players Suffer from Jetlag
January 11, 2005
In a battle of the players suffering horribly from jetlag,
Brazil's Ricardo Mello defeated Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman
6-4 6-1 in the first round of the Heineken Open.
Mello, who won the singles at a Challenger event in Brazil
last week at Sao Paulo, arrived in Auckland at 5.30am
on Tuesday morning and was on the court a little over
12 hours later.
Bjorkman had it even tougher. He lost the doubles final
in Chennai last week and arrived in Auckland at 11am on
Tuesday morning.
Mello broke Bjorkman at 5-4 to close out the first set,
and then put on an impressive display of passing shots
and powerful groundstrokes in the second set.
In the second round Mello will face No 6 seed Juan Ignacio
Chela. Chela defeated fellow Argentinian Guillermo Garcia-Lopez
6-2 6-2 in the first round.
