Juan Martin Del Potro Heineken Open Champion 2009

The result of 6-4 6-4 and an overall match time of 1h 24m does not reflect this tight hard-fought affair. Much of the game was solid hard court tennis, the protagonists using smashing serves to make ralleys short. "I won all my volleys. That is good for my tennis and for the future. The best players in the world have averything." Del Potro states where he is aiming at. As there did not seem any gaps in Del Potros game and it would be a great suprise if he did not make it into Top 5 of the ATP rankings in the very near future. Juan Martin Del Potro loves to play on hard court which is quite unusual for an Argentine player, first he says that he is no fan of the extra running you have to do on clay and furthermore it suits his all-court game.

Also the runner-up 6th seed American Sam Querrey took good memories with him on the way to Melbourne. Querrey played his way into the Kiwi-Tennis crowd. "I'll move up in the rankings and I got to play five matches. It was a good warm-up for the Australian Open." So also here no regrets to have come to Auckland and the big promise to come again next year.
