Talented Frenchman Heading To 2007 Heineken Open
Frenchman, Gael Monfils, one of the most exciting players in world tennis has been confirmed as a wildcard at the 2007 Heineken Open January 8-13, 2007 featuring the Sovereign singles and doubles.
Currently at 46 on the ATP rankings, twenty-year-old Monfils is regarded as one of the best athletes and more flamboyant players in the game. His ranking peaked at 23 in June 2006 after a series of good results on clay.
The Paris born player has one career title to his credit having won at Sopot, Poland in 2005 while also being a finalist at Metz and Lyon the same year and Doha last year (lost to Roger Federer).
Back, ankle and foot injuries as well as a stress fracture hampered part of 2006 but the 1.93m Swiss resident still managed to make the quarters on grass at Queens with a win over Ivan Ljubicic.
He also scored a victory against Marat Safin at Tennis Masters event at Cincinnati. At Roland Garros he reached a career-best Grand Slam finish of the fourth round after beating James Blake in the third round.
At Rome in his previous tournament he compiled a run of wins over Tommy Haas, Robby Ginepri, Fabrice Santoro and Andy Roddick before falling to Rafael Nadal.
The Heineken Open featuring the Sovereign singles and doubles will be held at the ASB Tennis Centre, No1 Tennis Lane, Parnell January Monday 8 – Saturday 13, 2007 with qualifying January Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 at the More FM Tennis Park, Albany.
